Mussoorie
Queen of Hill Stations, Mussoorie, is one of the
famous tourist destinations of Uttranchal. It is famous for its
scenic natural beauty. Mussoorieis situated in the Shivalik Hills
which is 35 Km far from Dehradoon, the capital of Uttaranchal. It
is 5000 Mt above sea level. Wonderful view of extensive Himalayan
snow ranges and glittering views of the Doon Valley can be seen
from here. Mussoorie has rich forest, flora and fauna. It has lots
of varieties of plants and animals.
In summers, the weather in Mussoorie is wonderful
and attracts lots of tourists from all over the world. In winters
the view of snow clad Himalayan ranges is breathtaking and enchanting.
One can easy see Himalayan peaks from Mussoorie. From Gun hill and
Lal Tibba, a clear view of China border and Himalayas is seen. A
Lal Bahadur Shashtri National Academy of Administrative officer
is located here, where training is imparted to the officers of Indian
Civil Services (IAS). Apart from these many schools and colleges
on National and International level are located here.
Famous for its incomparable beauty, this place
is popular as it is near to Delhi, the capital of India. It is conveniently
connected to Delhi by road and is gateway to Gangotri and Yamunotri
pilgrimages.
The history of Mussoorie is way back in the year
1827 when commander of British Army, Captain Young established a
centre for its development. This centre was ‘The Mullinger’ where
people made lots of cottages nearby this house. This place was named
Mussoorie as a lentil named ‘Masoor’ was grown here.
Excursion
Kempty fall
15 kms from Mu ssoorie on the Yamuna off road having
an altitude of 4500 feet, it has the distinction of being the biggest
and the most magnificent waterfall located in a beautiful valley
surrounded by high mountains. Bath at the foot of the falls is refreshing
and enjoyable for children and adults alike.
Camel's Back Road
It starts from Kulri Bazar near Rink hall and ends at Library Bazar
covering a total distance of about 3 kms. The main charm of this
road is horse riding and walking. Camel's rock with a life like
resemblance can be seen from the spot near Mussoorie School.
Jharipani Fall
This is 8.5 kms from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Jharipani Road. Visitors
can go by bus or by car upto 7 kms to Jharipani from where the fall
is 1.5 kms on foot.
Mossey Fall
7 kms from Mussoorie access via Barlowganj.
Nag Devta Temple
An ancient temple situated on Cart Mackenjie Road and is about 6
kms from Mussoorie. Vehicles can go right up to the spot. It provides
a charming view of the Doon Valley as well as Mussoorie.
Mussoorie Lake
A newly developed picnic spot situated on Mussoorie - Dehradun road,
6 kms from M ussoorie. It is a delightful spot.
Pedal boats are available. It commands an enchanting view of the
Doon Valley and nearby villages.
Van Chetna Kendra
At a distance of about 3 kms on Tehri by pass road this place is
developed as a picnic spot. The park is surrounded by pine forests
and flowering shrubs and is approachable by foot or car. The main
attraction is the wildlife of the park like Ghurar, Kankar, and
Himalayan Peacock etc.
Sir George Everest House
6 kms away, this is the Park estate of Sir George Everest, First
Surveyor General of India who had his office and residence there.
The highest peak Mount Everest is named after him.
Jwalaji Temple (Benog Hill)
9 kms to the west of Mussoorie and at an altitude of 2104 meters,
is the Jwalaji Temple. It is situated on the top of Benog hill and
has an idol of Durga Mata in it. The temple is surrounded by thick
forests and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas, Doon Valley
and Yamuna Valley.
